Real-time tracking of WGC2006

The 29th FAI World Gliding Championships at Eskilstuna has begun, and although the weather hasn't been the best, there has been some flying which could be followed in real-time with the Silent Wings Viewer and the vPos tracking system.

The tracking system consists of a small GPS device that transmits position data over the mobile phone network to a central server. By using the Silent Wings Viewer to connect to this server, you can watch the aircraft in real time on your own computer (delayed 15 minutes due to FAI rules). You can move the camera to any aircraft and any viewing position. It's like watching a sports event on TV where you control the camera!

There are 24 trackers available, and the plan is to equip the best (according to the current standings) pilots from one class with trackers each day.

The pictures on this page are taken from the task on monday (June 4.) in the 18m class. As you can see there were some quite spectacular gaggles before start.

To watch the races on your own computer, go to the download page and get your copy.

You will also need the sweden scenery to watch the live tracking.

The viewer is offered for free during the competitions in Sweden, i.e until June 19.

If you are unable to use the Silent Wings viewer, either due to the computer requirements, strict firewall rules on your network, or other issues, you can still watch snapshots of the tracking in your web browser on tracking.silentwings.no
